YRB awarded highway maintenance contract for Central Kootenay service area

A 10 year contract for highway maintenance was again awarded to Yellowhead Road & Bridge for the Central Kootenay Service area. That from the Government of BC who says it will begin on June 1, the day after the existing contract expires.

Communities included are Nelson, Salmo, Creston, Nakusp and New Denver.

All service areas require higher standards in the new maintenance contracts, according to the Province. Some of the biggest improvements over the most recent contracts are:

  • Return Winter Class A highways, such as highways 3 and 97, to bare pavement within 24 hours of a winter weather event. The previous standard was 48 hours.
  • Increase patrol frequency to 90 minutes on Class A highways during a winter storm. The previous standard was four hours.
  • Contractors will be required to be more proactive prior to a winter weather event occurring, and to spread anti-icing chemicals prior to the weather event.
