Council repeals Community Flag and Banner Policy

Nelson City Council has decided to repeal the Community Flag and Banner Policy.

This means that as of May 10, the City is no longer accepting banner or flag applications from non-profits to promote local events.

The City says this is due to the controversy around community banners and the need for council to remain neutral with its policies. The City was seeking a legal opinion over hanging a controversial right-to-life banner on Baker Street at the request of councillor Brittny Anderson.

According to the City, in future banner space will be used to promote City initiatives and events, such as Fire Prevention Week or the Green Home & Energy Show.

Those that had already been approved for this year will be honoured.
