Public meeting planned regarding Cottonwood Lake Park logging

A meeting is planned for Wednesday, December 19 in Nelson as concerns around logging at Cottonwood Lake Park escalate. Some logging has already been done and the Regional District of Central Kootenay have been in negotiations with the land owner. The RDCK’s CAO Stuart Horn says those conversations are still underway.

“As of now we’re in negotiations with the land owner to potentially purchase some of the lands surrounding Cottonwood Lake Regional Park. In terms of the scope or what that might look like it’s kind of yet to be determined. There’s still a fair bit of information that’s confidential regarding the negotiations.”

Horn adds that they are aware of the community’s concerns and that some of the directors are very much interested in pursuing some options as to what that might look like. The logging could come within five meters of the park boundary, but Horn says at this point there isn’t any immediate pressure to work out a deal.

He says the cost is a factor as well.

“Realizing that any decision the RDCK makes will impact tax payers as well, so we’re quite cognizant of the fact that the money we deal with whenever it comes to purchasing lands comes from the tax payers, so we have to balance everything.”

Some Nelson City Councillors have expressed interest in attending the meeting. It’s happening at the Nelson Rod and Gun Club from 6:00-8:00pm.
