Chief Len McCharles says clean up yard waste to reduce fire risk

 

You might want to Fire Smart your yard before summer arrives. Nelson Fire and Rescue Services Chief Len McCharles is encouraging residents to remove any woody debris, deadfall and long grass from around their homes to minimize fire risk. McCharles also invites residents to have their property assessed.

You can bring yard waste to the Grohman Narrows Transfer Station free of charge for the month of May. Chief McCharles has also approved a burning period from April 21 to May 6 for non-compostable woody debris, however you must obtain a permit from the fire hall.

This does not include the burning of yard waste or vegetative matter such as leaves, grass clippings, and vegetable stalks.
