Creator of Nelson’s welcome signs dies at 94

The man who created the iconic wooden sign’s which welcome people to Nelson has died.

Nelson-based author Greg Nesteroff wrote in his blog, The Kütne Reader, that Art Waldie passed away last month at 94.

Waldie created the signs in the 1960s.

If you’re coming into town they read “The City of Nelson Welcomes You” or “Your Visit, Nelson’s Pleasure, Please Return” if you’re leaving town.

In 1995 the city was looking into replacing the signs as Nelson’s centennial was approaching.

They did eventually get replaced but with exact replicas of the old ones.

There are three signs throughout Nelson.
