UPDATED: Harrop, Procter, Sunshine Bay on evacuation alert

Harrop, Procter, Sunshine Bay, and Kootenay Lake Village have been placed on evacuation alert.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay issued the order for 486 properties this afternoon after the Harrop Creek wildfire flared up overnight.

Carlee Kachman with the Southeast Fire Centre explains.

Kachman says they don’t yet know exactly how much it grew.

The fire was last mapped at 2,500 hectares.

Harrop, Procter, and Sunshine Bay are accessed by a single cable ferry.

The RDCK’s Travis Abbey says although residents are not required to leave right now, they should prepare to relocate livestock, trailers, and boats.

The community is served by a single cable ferry.

Abbey says in the event of an evacuation order, the ferry would be restricted to vehicles and passengers only, due to limited time and ferry capacity. Trailers would not be allowed.

The area covered by the evacuation alert.
