Grass fire extinguished in Railtown

The Nelson Fire Department says a grass fire in Railtown on Monday evening appears to have been the result of a carelessly discarded cigarette.

Crews got the call around 7:20 p.m. and responded to the CPR lands near Kal Tire. They arrived to find the fire burning between the railway tracks and the lake.

The fire was about 400 feet (122 m) from the nearest road access and about 1,400 square feet (130 square meters or 0.01 hectares).

The initial crew was able to extend hose lines and put water on the fire to keep it from spreading. When additional help arrived, the fire was extinguished.

No one was injured. Police are still investigating the cause.
