Woman rescued after falling down bank

An elderly woman who fell about 12 meters down a bank in Upper Fairview was rescued by firefighters Thursday.

Assistant chief Mike Daloise says when they arrived, they realized a rope rescue would be necessary. One firefighter went down the bank to assess her, and found she was relatively unharmed.

“It was determined that the best course of action was to send additional members down to perform a spinal immobilization package and retrieve the patient and rescuers with a rope system,” Daloise said.

Paramedics were on the scene to care for the woman. The Nelson Police Department also responded along with Dr. Nick Sparrow.

Daloise said although the woman’s fall down the steep snow-covered slope wasn’t witnessed, she was discovered shortly after being noticed missing.
