Nelson Police Department recognizes bravery

The Nelson Police Department has recognized some of its members as well as civilians for bravery and dedication.

One award recipient was reserve constable Mark Young who saved a capsized kayaker in Kootenay Lake last April.

Chief Paul Burkart says Young responded in the police boat when other officers were busy.

Also recognized was Cst. Chris Duncan, who responded to a call last year of a distraught woman with a knife.

Dr. Nick Sparrow was recognized for attending emergency calls on his own time.

Other award recipients were city worker Ryan Labbe who saved a man who jumped from the orange bridge and Dwight Weiers of Saskatchewan who in 2014 gave up his vehicle to help catch a bank robber.
