Deaf, blind can now text 911 in Kootenays

People who are blind, deaf, or speech impaired will now be able to communicate with 911 by text message.

The service has just become available in the regional districts of Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary.

But RDCK regional fire chief Andrew Bellerby says you need to sign up first.

Bellerby says it’s only available to those who are deaf, blind, hard of hearing or speech impaired.

Visit TextWith911.ca to register your cellphone and learn more about how the system works.

More information about the Text with 9-1-1 service can also be found at the E-Comm 911 website at: https://ecomm911.ca/contacting-911/T911system.php
