Nelson poised to act on short-term rentals

Nelson city council could set the wheels in motion tonight to regulate short-term rentals.

They’re being presented with a series of proposed by-law amendments to govern such accommodation.

It includes a sliding scale business license fee ranging from $80 to $800 depending on the situation.

It would also limit the total number of short-term rentals in the city and the number on each block.

Another suggestion would see a hike in all business license fees which have remained static since 2005.

And there’s more long-term rental accommodation may be encouraged by waiving certain fees.

If council gives the go ahead the changes will be sent to a lawyer before coming back for first reading.

The new scheme is expected to be in place for 2017.

Nelson has an estimated 120 short-term rentals — most currently illegal.
