Short-term rentals hit Nelson council table

It’s Nelson city council’s turn to talk about regulating short-term rentals.

They’ll meet this morning to discuss the issue.

Since May city hall has employed a dedicated researcher to address the gap between city policies and the market.

According to Alex Thumm’s report the vast majority of Nelson’s estimated 120 short-term rentals are considered illegal.

That’s for lack of a business license or non-compliance with zoning.

However not many people are demanding they be banned.

The report says bans in other jurisdiction have proven unenforceable and potentially detrimental to tourism.

The city has been gathering public feedback in recent weeks including an online survey that closes today.

Based on that, Thumm will return in August with potential bylaw amendments.
