Harrop Wetlands restoration

A local environmental group wants all stakeholders in the mix for a plan to restore the Harrop Wetlands at Sunshine Bay Regional Park.

It’s key habitat for blue-listed species including western toads and great blue heron but it has been damaged by vehicle use over the years.

Friends of Kootenay Lake Program Director Claire de la Salle says the problem is the wetlands dry out for part of the year.

De la Salle says they’re committed to finding a balance between what the ATV riders need and what nature needs.

She’s encouraging everyone to offer input at three planning sessions in Harrop later this month.
