Hundreds of billions of plastic grocery bags are used around the world each year and end up in landfills, but that shouldn’t be happening in Nelson.
That’s the message from local resident Claire Hitchman who wants the Queen City to ban them.
She’s organized a petition and says many downtown businesses are in favour of outlawing the bags which are harmful to the environment.
Any move to ban the bags would be a process.

Some jurisdictions around the world have some sort of ban or are imposing taxes on plastic bags.
Hitchman says nelson is the sort of place that should have a ban.
