Nelson City Council has signed off on the design concept for the cottonwood market in the Railtown neighborhood.
It involves using value-added wood products such as multi-laminate support columns for an open-air tent-style band shell, central plaza and 7 large kiosks.
Canvas coverings will be put over the top.
Councillor Janice Morrison says making it a multi-use venue, not just a Saturday market, has great public appeal.
The city has approved another $30,000 for final design and the entire project could cost around $750,000 for completion in May 2017.
