A local BC SPCA branch is hopeful new regulations will help stamp out irresponsible breeding practices.
Rob Andrew in Nelson is reacting to measures being announced by the province to better monitor breeders of cats and dogs and to hold them to the same standards as vets in Canada.
Andrew is looking forward to promised consultation with the likes of the SPCA and other stakeholders on possibly requiring licensing or registration of breeders.
For kennel and cattery operations the province will now adopt a regulation that is followed by all vets in Canada.
This covers things like housing, ventilation, food and water, care and supervision and record-keeping andthat veterinary care must be provided quickly if an animal is sick or in pain.
