The unemployment rate continues to rise in the Kootenays.
Stats Canada reports the jobless rate for January was 7.0%.
That’s worse than December and also an increase from January 2015 when the rate was at 5.2%.
5,600 people from the available workforce are currently unemployed.

That’s 1,800 more than a year ago.
Stats Canada says these numbers are a rolling three-month average and they combine the west and east Kootenay.
The BC unemployment rate declined to 6.4% in January from 6% in December.
